Polytechnic
National polytechnic university of Armenia is the legal successor of K.Marx Yerevan Polytechnic Institute (YPI) and State engineering university of Armenia (Polytechnic), which was established in 1933 by the unification of the Construction and Chemical and technological institutes.
The newly established institute, while having 2 departments and 107 students, had a calling to provide skilled professionals for the construction industry of the republic which was transformed into a huge construction platform and for the immensely developing chemical industry. The polytechnic has become the constant concomitant of the country’s industry, success of which was simultaneously and mutually stipulated by the expansion and development of the institute.
Expanding in line with Armenia’s industrial pace, in 1980-1985, it became the largest higher education institution and one of the leading engineering schools of the Soviet Union represented by its 25000 students and more than 65 specialties.
On November 29, 1991 Yerevan polytechnic institute has been reorganized, taking the name State engineering university of Armenia (SEUA). By the decree of the government of Armenia of 2005, the university had taken back its traditional name “Polytechnic”. On November 13, 2014 the State engineering university of Armenia was renamed to National polytechnic university of Armenia.
NPUA central educational complex is located in Yerevan, and its branches are in Gyumri, Vanadzor and Kapan, which are the powerful centers of the scientific thought of these marzes. NPUA college and High School function under the auspices of the university. The university is the only institution that has its own kindergarten.
The university implements secondary, higher and post university professional education in 4 main educational programs awarding qualification degrees in the following directions, namely, secondary specialized, bachelor’s, master’s and engineer researcher .
A number of ancillary centers, cultural, sporting, social and food catering services for students operate in the university besides the educational subdivisions. The university has a science and technological library with more than a million units of literature, a wide network of computers with more than 2000 modern computers and a number of auditoriums equipped with technological capacity.
Currently, Polytechnic university is a leading institution in national higher technical education and enjoys its reputation not only in our country, but also beyond its borders. It is a huge scientific and research center of technical sciences. Here, research is carried out in the spheres of mathematical modeling of complex technical systems, nanotechnology, information technology and informatics, machine learning and material science, power and electrical engineering, radio engineering and microelectronics, chemical technologies and mechanical engineering, automation and management systems as well as in the sphere of applied mathematics. Institutes were formed and continue to be formed, which delve into this education sphere and are aimed at the provision of more profound knowledge.
Currently, the Polytechnic has around 175 contracts of cooperation with international partner universities and research centers around the world. More than 22 international scientific research and grant programs are being implemented annually in the university. These are funded by different international agencies and foundations such as «Erasmus+», ESPAQ, «DOCMEN», «MARUEEB», «InnoCENS» and «eDrone»:
We can distinguish non-academic active partners of NPUA, namely Synopsys, National Instruments, Microsoft, Kaspersky Lab, Autodesk, Magate, Chronimet Mining, Impex High Tech, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Beeline, RusAtom, «Tashir Group» and a number of other leading international companies and institutions.
The university has a close membership in a number of leading foreign HEIs and other consortiums uniting science research centers while successfully participating in a number of science and research programs for a long time period (INTAS, USAID, NATO SCIENCE, SCOPES, FP, MNTC etc.).
NPUA incentivizes participation of the students in exchange programs. An inseparable part of the student population of the university is international students. Currently, more than 80 international students study at NPUA.
The scientific research is being carried out both in institutes/departments and in basic research laboratories at Polytechnic. Six specialized Boards awarding the “PhD” and “Doctor of Science” scientific degrees function at the university.
During 85 years of operations, there are more than 125000 alumni of the Polytechnic in the country that molded the engineering potential, scientific and technological community and industrial governance of the Republic of Armenia.
