Scientific and educational center of languages of NPUA provides language teaching to all specialties, on all educational levels of the university. It was established in 2012 and functions according to NPUA Charter, other legal acts and its own Statute.

Structure of the center

The center comprises three chairs: Armenian, Russian and foreign languages.

Head of the chair of Armenian language is PhD in linguistics, associate professor Hasmik Tsolaki Petrosyan (on a public basis)

Head of the chair of Russian language is PhD in teaching, associate professor Seda Shavarshi Asatryan.

Head of the chair of foreign languages is PhD in linguistics, associate professor Hasmik Zakari Ghazaryan.

65 lecturers work at the center, including 14 candidates of science, associate professors, 4 candidates of science, assistants, 1 assistant and 45 lecturers.

2 administrative employees render services to the center and its chairs.

Functions of the center

The languages taught at the chairs of the center are Armenian, Russian, English, German and French that are taught to the academic groups on the following educational degrees:

Secondary special education,

The bachelor’s degree,

The master’s degree,

Post-graduate studies

The lecturers of the center, besides educational processes, also carry out scientific and teaching and organizational works and extra-curricular activities. Some lecturers of the university also carry out editing and translation, are included in educational, teaching and organizational works of different HEIs of the republic as invited members.

Chair overview

14 lecturers work at the chair (13 of them on contractual basis and 1 – concurrently), namely 7 PhD in linguistics associate professors, 1 PhD in linguistics, 6 lecturers.

The chair implements courses on the following educational degrees:

Secondary special education (1st year of studies) – “Armenian language” and “Armenian Literature”,

Secondary special education (2nd year of studies) – “Armenian language and speech culture foundations”,

Bachelor full-time (1st year of studies), correspondence course (2nd year of studies) – “Armenian language and literature”,

FSD (preparatory courses and 1st year of studies) “Armenian language”,

Post-graduate studies (1st year of studies) “Academic writing and thesis arrangement”

All the courses are equipped with educational programs, as well as educational and teaching literature.

While obtaining course knowledge, the learners acquire the following competences:

1st year of studies at secondary special education on the subjects of “Armenian language” and “Armenian literature”:

They should acquire and apply grammar and language patterns, abilities and skills to speak and write the language literally correct, recognize the values of the literature work, abilities to connect it to real world examples.

2nd year of studies at secondary special education on the subjects of “Armenian language” and “Armenian literature”:

They should structure written and spoken language, have communication skills and abilities to use language patterns in professional settings.

“Armenian language and literature” at full-time and correspondence courses at the bachelor’s degree:

Native Armenian as national identity and protection on the basis of strong position and intellectual abilities, usage of language patterns, styles of oral and written language, skills used in professional communication, ability to comprehend development processes and logics of Armenian literature and abilities to analyze the artistic values of the most valuable works of the Armenian literature.

“Armenian language” at preparatory courses of FSD and first year of studies:

Abilities to translate special texts in written and oral form, skills necessary for communication and abilities to use minimal terms and vocabulary

“Academic writing and thesis arrangement” at 1st year of postgraduate studies:

Abilities and competences to arrange academic texts, use scientific style and terms in the text, translate and edit texts. Abilities to formulate academic works in Armenian in a literate manner

Scientific

Lecturers of the chair of Armenian language participate in on-site, republic wide and international conferences, seminars and publish their academic works.

38 lecturers work at the chair (36 – on a contract basis, 1- part-time, 1 – concurrently), including 3 PhD in linguistics, associate professor, 2 PhD in linguistics, teaching assistants.

Secondary special education (1st and 2nd year of studies) – “Foreign language”

Bachelor’s full-time and correspondence courses (1st and 2nd year of studies) – “Foreign language”

Post-graduate studies (1st year of studies) – “Foreign language”, “English for Special Purposes”
